Maybe there was a trainer school or something. People had to learn this, didn't they? If so many new people came to this world, someone had to educate them. Learning by trial and error wasn't any good. Sofia was scared of her first battle. If she did something wrong, her Pokémon would get hurt. That was not acceptable. They were all so cute. She had trouble seeing Akina or Petilil battle. They were so small, after all. She would use Lacuna for her first fight. After all, he had told her fighting was normal. Akina came from a world without battles. At least Sofia believed there were no humans there. So there were no battles. Right? She didn't really know. She was scared Akina's wings could get damaged in battle, though. Maybe they wouldn't heal anymore then. Like a butterfly's wings. And Petilil was just too small and scared to fight. So Lacuna it was. "Lacuna?" Sofia looked up. "When we battle, you'll do that, okay?" Lacuna looked a bit surprised. "Very well." He nodded. "After all, Akina is not from here. And Petilil has never battled before."

He sighed. "Neither have I. But I suppose I have seen some battles before. Maybe, Petilil, too, though?" He looked at Petilil. The grass Pokémon was still enjoying the water. She shook her head then, though. Water drops flew everywhere. "Alright. I'll do it, then." Lacuna nodded. "But you two look, if possible. You need to learn." "No problem. I actually look forward to my first battle." Akina smiled. Sofia gave her a surprised look. Akina wanted to battle? Little Akina? That was a bit scary. But if it was normal, there was nothing Sofia could do. She still hated the thought, though. "Shall we train now?" Akina asked. She was obviously eager to get stronger. "I won't use fire, though. Too many trees here. I don't want to burn something down. I'll have to practice that some other time. Lacuna? Want to practice our Tail Whips?" Lacuna nodded.

"That sounds good. It won't harm anything." The Pokémon got away from the water. Sofia watched curiously. Petilil was less interested. She still splashed around in the water. Akina and Lacuna stood next to each other. At the same time, they started to swing their tails left and right. Sofia waited. And waited. And waited. But nothing happened. Wasn't something supposed to happen? This was odd. She looked at Petilil. The Pokémon didn't seem confused. So she was just not understanding again. Strange, strange world. "When will something happen?" she asked. "Nothing will happen", Akina responded. "We have no target. Tail Whip lowers Defense. We're not using it on anyone, though. Petilil would be the only target. But there's no reason to do that. We can practice like that just fine." Sofia blinked. That was all? Wagging your tail back and forth? How could that possibly an attack?

Dogs did that at home! It looked cute. That was all! There was no special effect. How could something like that made something happen here? That didn't deserve to be called 'attack'. It was shaking one's butt! That was just silly! This world was so odd. Well, it was good, too. Battles seemed less scary now. Containing something like that, they maybe wouldn't be that bad. Like two cute Pokémon wagging tails. Sofia watched Lacuna and Akina some more. They seemed really eager to get better. How could someone get better at wagging tails? Sofia had no idea. She looked at Petilil. "Do you want to do something, too?" she asked. After all, Petilil had attacks that didn't hurt, too! Petilil hesitated. She didn't really want to. After all, she didn't want to have a trainer. She didn't want to battle either, really. So why train? But well, the others worked hard. She supposed she could do something. Just so they would leave her alone. "Alright..." Petilil got out of the water. She concentrated.

Sofia watched closely. Was she imagining things? It looked like Petilil's leaves were growing. They already were pretty big. Well, that was at least somewhat impressive. Still, could that help in battle? Maybe Petilil did something with her leaves in battle? Sofia had never touched them. She thought they were sensitive. Maybe they were toxic? Or sharp? Or burned when touched? But Petilil looked so harmless. "Petilil? How do you attack?" Sofia asked. Petilil looked uncomfortable. She didn't want to say. In the end, she would have to fight then. Sofia had said she wouldn't force her, though. She wasn't sure if she trusted the human, though. "Tell her, Petilil", Lacuna said. "Sofia will keep her word", Akina added. Petilil nodded slowly. "I...absorb. Life energy, I think..." The Petilil looked a bit confused. She had trouble to explain it. "It hurts others. I get healed. It's not very strong though. I'm still weak."

Sofia nodded. "That's no problem. And I won't force you. You heard Lacuna. He will battle. You can get stronger by training like this. No need for you to get hurt." Petilil nodded. That made her feel better. "If Lacuna gets beaten, I'll take over", Akina said. Lacuna looked unhappy, though. Sofia didn't understand for a minute. Then she got it. She looked at Petilil. The little Pokémon was a bit confused now. "These water types, right?" Sofia asked. Lacuna nodded. Petilil flinched. She understood, too. Fire types couldn't beat water types. She was a grass Pokémon. This would be her duty. Protecting the fire Pokémon. She really didn't want to, though. Sofia saw how unhappy Petilil was. This was not good. The little Pokémon was scared enough. She would never get comfortable like this. Sofia sighed. "We'll be careful?"

What could she say? "You are outside a lot. If we have to fight, we'll look for similiar trainers. Who keep their Pokémon outside, I mean. We'll look for one without a water Pokémon." She hoped they would find someone like that. Not that she wanted to fight in the first place. If she had to, though, she wanted to win. They couldn't afford to lose money. "Good idea", Lacuna said. "We'll look around in town anyway", Akina added. "For your park." That cheered Petilil up a bit. Sofia put her back into the water. Maybe that would make her happy again. Petilil just sat there now though. Sofia hoped she wouldn't feel bad now. Petilil shouldn't feel forced to do something. Especially not fighting. She was supposed to become a graceful Pokémon. They all were. Nyla had talked about beauty contests. Her Pokémon were rare and pretty. Sofia had to look into this. Maybe there was price money. That would be much better. Though Nyla had said fighting was involved again. There was no way around that! It was so frustrating! Was there no other chance?

Sofia had to into other ways to make money. Maybe befriend other nobles. Surely they would recognize her as one, too. She had manners, after all. Petilil would be scared, though. Sofia didn’t want that. She also refused to work, though. She was a noble. Nobles didn’t work. She also didn’t want to beg. She was too proud for that. Getting strong Pokémon was a good step, though. That would open possibilities. Would wagging tails help, though? “How do you get stronger by that?” she asked. “It looks harmless.” “It will help in battle.” Lacuna didn’t stop training. “Yes, it has an effect”, Akina confirmed. Sofia sighed. She didn’t understand Pokémon. Maybe she needed to see a fight first. Could she watch one somewhere? It would maybe help. She looked at Petilil. Then she put water on her again. She hoped that would cheer her up. Petilil still seemed to like it. She didn’t move anymore, though. Maybe she was thinking about her home.

Sofia understood that. She thought about her home a lot, too. She wanted to talk to Petilil more. They could be sad together. Petilil could maybe be a great friend. Sofia wanted to know what made her so scared. She tried to be extra nice to Petilil. The Pokémon still didn’t trust her though. Sofia wondered what had happened in her past. They needed to see more humans. She wanted to see if Petilil avoided them all. Hopefully it was that way. If it was only Sofia, Sofia would be sad. Also quite confused, too. She had done nothing wrong. Maybe Petilil really just disliked nobles. Sofia wondered why. Petilil didn’t seem to be that kind of commoner. Sofia sighed. “Let’s move”, she said. “You can wag tails elsewhere.” Lacuna nodded. “Then sit up again.” Sofia picked up Petilil. Akina took another drink. When she was ready, they moved on. The sound from the waterfall got quieter. Talking was easier again. Sofia sighed. It had been pretty loud.

Pretty, too, but far too much noise for her taste. Now they were back in the forest. Walking was still difficult. Akina stumbled over a branch. “Are you hurt?” Lacuna asked. “No. I’m fine. Thanks for asking.” Akina smiled. Sofia looked ahead. No end to the forest in sight. “I wish you could ride. But there’s not enough space here.” “I can go into the Pokéball.” Petilil looked hopeful. Sofia shook her head. She wanted to spend time with Petilil. She would always be afraid otherwise. “No. Stay with me. You are in your ball too often. You are a plant. You should get more sun. You lived outside, after all. It must be good for you.” It was a bad excuse. Sofia couldn’t think of anything else, though. Petilil squeaked. She seemed unhappy. Still, she didn’t protest.

Maybe she liked the sun. Sofia hoped so. She wanted Petilil to grow. The sun wouldn’t help with the evolution, though. They needed this stone for that. Sofia wondered where to get it. It probably was expensive. Maybe in a jewelry store. She had no money for that. They would toss her out. How bothersome. She would not have such problems at home. She would just ask her father there. Then he would buy her the stone. She wondered if many Pokémon evolved with it. “Are evolution stones expensive?” she asked. “I don’t know.” Akina shook her head. “I’m not sure they’re even buyable.” Lacuna looked thoughtful. Petilil was silent. She seemed to know something. “They are rare”, she finally said. “I know that.” Rare! Sofia sighed. Just her luck. Maybe she needed to ask the gods for one. The shrine was very convenient indeed. Yet she didn’t want to rely on the gods.

They had abducted her, after all. She had to remain angry. It was hard when they gave her things. “We could ask at the shrine.” Akina had the same idea, it seemed. Lacuna nodded in agreement. Petilil grew silent again. Sofia grimaced. Petilil hated the topic. “Vulpix evolve with stones, too.” Akina smiled. Now the topic was on her. Sofia looked surprised. Another Pokémon who needed a stone. “Can you evolve?” Lacuna looked at Akina. “You are not a normal Vulpix.” “I don’t know.” Akina sighed. Sofia pondered this. If Akina couldn’t evolve, a stone for her would be worthless. So Petilil was more important. But Petilil seemed to want to stay like this. Sofia was the trainer, though. Was it her decision? Or Petilils? Sofia wanted her to evolve. She wanted a Lilligant. But what if Petilil didn’t want to stay anymore then? Could she force her? That felt wrong.

This could not work out. She needed to convince Petilil. But how to do that? It surely would be difficult. She looked at Petilil. The Pokémon was still tense. Sofia sighed. Time to drop the whole topic. She needed to find out what was wrong first. She would have no chance otherwise. Akina seemed to realize this, too. She didn’t talk about the stones anymore, either. “We’re almost out.” Lacuna looked forward. The forest grew thinner. Sofia was relieved. It was about time! She wanted to be out again. Hopefully they would find their way back. She didn’t know how big this area was. They had no food with them. It was some time until dark, though. The darkness scared Sofia. This world seemed too wide. There were too little towns. Or maybe it just seemed this way. Sofia had never travelled much before. This was all new for her. At least she didn’t have to walk. She was very glad to have Lacuna.

He was an amazing gift. She was very grateful to Kage. The forest had almost ended now. Sofia could see the sun again. Petilil seemed to like it, too. Akina could walk faster again. The ground wasn’t that covered with things anymore. There was more grass again. Finally, they were out. They were on the flat part again. “Where are we?” Sofia looked around. Had they been here before? It looked all the same to her. There were no landmarks. “Are we lost?” “Let’s move on.” Lacuna walked on. “Yes, we won’t find out by staying here.” Akina sniffed the ground. Sofia wondered if that helped. Was Akina like a real fox? Or did she just look like one? Pokémon resembled animals a lot. At least some did. Nyla sure didn’t. Or was there an animal like that Sofia didn’t know? Well, the people here wouldn’t know. They didn’t know Sofia’s animals.

Sofia missed home. It would be nice to have Pokémon there, too, though. Pokémon were pretty amazing. Sofia really liked them. If only this battle stuff wouldn’t exist. That was bothersome. “Hey! Look there!” Akina perked up. Sofia looked ahead. “It’s the entrance.” Lacuna sighed. “Seems like we walked in a circle.” “That’s good. I want to leave. It’ll be too late if we go in deeper again.” Sofia was quite pleased. They weren’t lost! “Can I go into the Pokéball now?” Petilil looked hopeful. Sofia sighed. Then she nodded. She had no excuse anymore. She called Petilil back. Then Lacuna knelt down. Akina climbed up to Sofia. Sofia stroked her fur. “Let’s move on. I want to reach a town. We can come back another time.” Lacuna started moving again. For this time, they had trained enough. Not that they had gotten all that much done. Hopefully, the next time would be more effective. At least Sofia hoped so. For now, it was time to move on. ~ FIN ~
