Nikki let out a gasp of what one could assume was joy at the second Caterpie's fall. But she couldn't help but feel bad for the poor thing, so she called out a "Sorry!" in an apologetic tone. One down, one to go.
Torch grinned confidently as he turned to face the last standing Caterpie. He was certain they could win this fight now! By now, Torch had caught on to his Trainer's strategy and went in for yet another Scratch attack. He flung himself towards the lead Caterpie with all his might and clawed at it. "Hit it!", Nikki whispered excitedly under her breath. Much to her surprise, battles were sort of a thrill.

And so Torch did hit the enemy Caterpie, and his attack seemed nearly just as effective on this one as it had been on the first Caterpie that he took down entirely on his own. The Caterpie was sent stumbling backwards as the claws of the Charmander raked across his skin.
Caterpie One lost 5 HP! It has 5 HP remaining!
The Caterpie had enough time to regain itself before the odd Caterpie, that it had been making fun off, lunged forward again for yet another Tackle attack! It slammed into the other Caterpie, this time sending it back quite a ways. The green and orange Caterpie almost felt guilty for hurting it, but it was the one that really seemed to want to fight, not it. It had to defend itself and help the Charmander that stood up for it, right...? Right...
Caterpie One lost 3 HP! It has 2 HP remaining!
The Caterpie that now fought on its own wasn't doing well. After the latest onslaught of attacks, it could hardly get up. When it did, it tried to shake itself off, which only worked to a small degree. It knew that this was a loosing battle in the very instant his partner fell or, perhaps, the very instant his other partner had abandoned them before the battle. Maybe... it wasn't right to have done what it had done. Apparently, the other Caterpie was stronger than it assumed.
So... Who to attack with the last of its power? It took the Caterpie a moment to decide, before summoning the last ounces of its strength. It threw itself at the fire Pokemon with all it had left.
Hit! Torch lost 2 HP!

Both Torch and Nikki were a bit surprised that he'd hit. What was that? ..three successful attacks in a row? Torch was a good battler despite being a big ol' marshmallow at heart. She winced again when it targeted Torch and tackled him.
Suddenly, Nikki's enthusiasm began to falter a bit as she could tell the Caterpie had little strength left to go on. Though it had a mean nature toward the different Caterpie, she still wanted to give it a chance to retreat. Maybe it had a better disposition towards the other Caterpie, the one that had lost against Torch. She hated to leave them both out here with such injuries. "Um, hey!", she called out to the leader Caterpie, "..are ... are you sure you want to continue? I think you should focus on caring for your friend." She gestured toward the other Caterpie with her hand.
She was hoping that all differences could be put aside and they could all move on without more injury. She had no idea just how far they were from the town and she didn't want to risk Torch's health and the other Caterpie's as well.

The leading Caterpie gazed up at Nikki as she called out to it. It stared at her blankly without giving any sort of response. It was attempting to think it over, glancing at its fallen companion in the process. It had the bravery and honor to stand by its side even when they had both realized that it was a loosing battle. But... "You're too soft," it said, shooting its eyes back toward the human girl. "Have you considered that... we're used to this? If you're afraid to ever leave a wild Pokemon after battling it... your companions will remain untrained and weak." It was somewhat strange that a Pokemon as small as a Caterpie was talking in such a way. Who knew how tough the creatures could be? It was so strange.
Yet the Caterpie looked to its fallen friend again, feeling some sympathy for it, since it had yet to stir. "It is your choice, though, isn't it? Your move."

She was ... too soft? Though Nikki knew that to be true at heart, it still shocked her that the Caterpie had told her so. Maybe she wasn't cut out to be a trainer ... She bit her bottom lip at the thought. And the Caterpie brought up a good thought. Were they used to this? How often did they get into battles? And how often were they left like this? She had never really stopped and considered it. Perhaps recovery was more swift that she imagined it to be, and really, they'd be fine afterwards. Oh, there were so many things she didn't know about Pokemon. Or battling for that matter. She really felt like an amateur trainer now.
But regardless, she looked up at the Caterpie with her decision made up. "I-I know it's probably foolish of me to say this but ... I don't w-want to keep fighting." After saying those words, she felt cowardly. Torch turned and looked at his trainer with surprise. He had thought that all trainers loved battling... I mean, wasn't that why they wanted Pokemon? To battle them and see how strong they could get them?
She didn't want Torch to stay weak if they were to do more battling in the future, but... "I'm sure there will be more chances... Torch won't stay weak, h-he will grow stronger!", she said with some faith. "Battles aren't my top priority ..." Her voice softened at the end as she shifted her eyes onto Torch. She wasn't sure if the Charmander would agree with her on that. Right now, she merely wished to reach the safe refuge of the city. Once there, maybe then she would focus more on leveling...
At that, Torch stood down and stared at the Caterpie questioningly. He would respect Nikki's wishes on the matter, even though he wanted to become stronger.

The oddly colored Caterpie continued to look between the other Caterpie still standing, the Charmander, and the trainer. It had never really seen a trainer take sympathy on a wild Pokemon, and it found it to be amazing that she did, unlike the Caterpie that they were fighting. Yes, wild Pokemon had certainly grown used to battling. How else did they level, themselves? Pokemon that were unable to battle in a fair fight were usually able to get up and go off shortly after the battle. All they needed was a little rest. Most wild Pokemon even had a system, where the wild Pokemon all helped one another.
The Caterpie that they had been fighting against, nodded, actually respecting the trainer's wishes. "If that is what you want," it said. Then, it looked toward the bug Pokemon that it had been picking on, "You're a better battler than I expected. My... apologies..."
The orange and green Caterpie nodded in return to the statement, "Thank you..." It was an unusual turn of events, wasn't it? It looked up to Nikki, feeling a little shy again. "Um... Could I possibly... go with you?"

Nikki smiled thankfully and nodded as the Caterpie decided to fight no more. Torch was surprised that the Caterpie had taken Nikki's desire into thought; judging from how it seemed so confident and in a fighting mood before, it was an unexpected change. Though, Torch was happy nonetheless.
When the odd little Caterpie had asked to join them, Nikki was at a loss for words. It was a shocker to her that any other Pokemon would want to join their team. Perhaps being kind payed off after all. "Oh! I-I would be honored if you came with us!", she laughed happily. Torch clapped his hands together with a smile. "Awesome! We made a friend! Welcome to the team, pal. The name's Torch." "And I'm Nikki. Welcome!", they both chimed, getting in a proper introduction.
"Oh yeah ..." Nikki went back to her bag and started rummaging through it for one of the empty Pokeballs Maevia had given her. "You will need a Pokeball ...", she said, finally pulling out a Pokeball and holding it up. She gently placed it on the ground for the Caterpie to come to. She figured it was much more polite than throwing it at the poor dear.

The Caterpie's tail wiggled in delight as the trainer was happily willing to allow it to join them. It nodded its head. "It is nice to properly meet you," it chimed in, though it didn't have a name to offer them in return. He was sure that would change quickly, though. Trainers were the ones that normally named Pokemon, right...?
When the pokeball was set down before it, the oddly colored Caterpie skittered toward it. It tilted its head to the side curiously before prodding at it with one of its suction cup feet. Upon the instant of touching the center button, the bug Pokemon was sucked in with a red light. The pokeball wiggled for only a moment before calming once again.
Congratulations! Nikki caught a Caterpie!

Both watched in awe as the Caterpie was sucked into the Pokeball in mere seconds. Even Torch, being a Pokemon, was still surprised at the process. He personally preferred the outside to his Pokeball. He didn't like being confined, and the thought actually made him wince a bit.
The Caterpie wouldn't have to wait long inside it's Pokeball for only moments after the ball had stopped rocking, Nikki already swiped it up from the ground. She smiled happily as the realization of her first capture sunk it. She let out an "Ah!" and pressed the button, releasing the Caterpie.
Just as quickly as it had been sucked into the Pokeball, it was back in front of them, seemingly quite happy. "Ha, nice to see you again." Nikki kneeled down to get a better look at her new Pokemon. Upon closer inspection, she realized that the dear was female. Almost instantly, she had a name come to mind, if the Caterpie so chose to accept it that was. "If you would like a name ... I have one in mind." The odd little Caterpie looked up at her with interest. "Oh? What came to mind?", she asked curiously. Given that the Caterpie would eventually become a Butterfree, Nikki wanted something that fit with it. "I was thinking of Flutter. What do you think?" The Caterpie thought a moment, then nodded in agreement. "I-I think it's a beautiful name. Thank you."

Scooping up the oddball Caterpie, Nikki smiled. "Flutter it is then!" Torch nodded, liking the name himself. Nikki gently placed Flutter onto her shoulder and pat her on the head. "You can ride up here if you like. Unless you want to go back inside your Pokeball...?" Flutter shook her head no. "N-no thanks... I like it up here.", she wiggled happily at the view. Nikki giggled at the feeling then turned to look at Torch who had begun tugging on her pants leg.
"What is it Torch? Something wrong?" "It looks like nighttime is coming.", he informed her, pointing up at the darkening skies. Nikki looked up with some worry. "Oh dear, you're right... Shoot ... I was hoping we would have reached the town in one day." Torch folded his arms in thought. "I don't think anyone makes it there in just one day alone." "He's right,", Flutter added in, "Between all of the Pokemon run ins and the forest itself, it's n-not uncommon to stay out here for t-three days."
Nikki frowned at being told this. "Oh dear ... I was hoping not to stay out here at night..." "We should make camp. When it gets dark, it'll be impossible to see where we're going." Flutter "Mhmm"ed in agreement and soon Nikki decided to take their advice. "O-okay." With that in mind, they started again deeper into the forest to find a sheltered place to stay for the night.

By the time the trio had traveled deeper into the trees, the darkness was nearly blinding. Paired with more, tightly standing trees, there was barely enough light for one to see 5 feet ahead of them. Luckily, though, the light from Torch's tail flame provided a bit guidance through the darkness.
Up ahead, there was a bit of a clearing, from what Nikki could see. It was void of any protruding roots and large rocks, so it would make for good ground to sleep on. Upon reaching the spot, Nikki dropped her bag off to the side and carefully sat down. "This looks as good of a place as any, I suppose." Flutter skittered down her back and onto the ground next to her. She could see Nikki was worried by the look on her face. "D-don't worry. It's not that bad out here.", she offered, trying to comfort her.
Torch, who was far from tired right now, walked over and laid a reassuring hand on Nikki's knee. "Yeah, we won't let anything get you!" Nikki smiled at her companions' words. She wasn't a very outdoorsy person, but she felt a little better with the two Pokemon by her side. "Thanks you guys."

Feeling a bit better about having to camp outside, Nikki grabbed up her bag with haste, using Torch's tail light while the Charmander was nearby. She began searching through it, hoping Maevia had happened to pack some sort of blanket. Much to her happiness, the Gardevoir seemed to have known the future, and she quickly pulled out a light fleece blanket that had been packed at the bottom of the bag. She scanned through the bag once more, though a pillow wasn't to be found to complete the package.
Thinking for a moment, she decided to use the bag as one and laid it onto the ground in a nice heap. She took one last look around before laying down and throwing the blanket over her. As Flutter looked at her curiously, Nikki motioned for her to come and get under the blanket with her. The Caterpie seemed to squeak happily and with a wagging tail, she crawled underneath the blanket and snuggled up close to Nikki.
Nikki looked at Torch and gave him the same motion. "Come over here, dear. You don't have to sleep by yourself." Torch smiled and walked over to them. "Thanks, but I'm not really tired yet." "Oh? But you need to get some rest, too." Torch nodded and plopped himself over Nikki's torso in an attempt to keep her warmer. Nikki looked at him with question as he did that. "I'll try to sleep, but I make no promises.", he laughed. Nikki smiled and decided not to fight him on the issue. He let out a soft sigh and blinked. It would probably be quite a while before he drifted off to sleep ... but for now, he'd just stare out into the dark treeline.
Slowly, Nikki began to doze off, finding it harder and harder to keep her heavy eyelids open. Flutter, who had surprisingly already managed to fall asleep, had begun to snore lightly. Nikki let out a tired giggle, then a yawn, and before she knew it, she found herself drifting away.

While two out of the three of the group were snoozing, Torch may have witnessed an unusual sight to behold. A yellow light or, rather, three yellow lights in a group together were floating within the not-so-distant trees of the forest. The lights weaved in and out among the trees and the branches, but never made a sound.

It was a failed attempt at sleep that provided the Charmander with a most unusual sight. Strange lights caught his eye quickly as they seemed to dance and weave silently between the tree trunks. "Huh?" Torch raised his head and stared in the direction of the lights, wondering if they were really real or if it was simply the darkness playing tricks on his eyes.
He quickly got up to investigate, though making sure not to disturb the girls in the process. He walked toward the area slowly then stopped, not wanting to stray too far from his friends, and merely stood in wonderment at the strange happening. In the darkness, he couldn't make out any distinctive shapes that struck him as familiar, so he was at a loss as to what it could have been.
"Hello?", he called out in a harsh whisper, "Is anyone there?" Just what came out here at night ...?

Whatever it was, it seemed to hear Torch when he yelled out to it. The three yellow lights stopped dead for a moment, before hovering straight toward the Charmander, only swerving around a tree or a bush when it hindered their path. "Helloooo~" A voice called out in return.
