Venya strode confidently through the woods. It had been some time since he had a chance to walk and, though he had been a bit shaky at first, his usual gait had returned to him before long. At the moment, he wasn't quite sure where he was walking to, as he had never been here before nor could he remember how he had arrived. The possibility of this being a dream had already occurred to him, but he determined the probability of that to be low. After all, you don't think you're dreaming when you really are, right?
Having not seen any life aside from the vegetation thus far, the fence that suddenly appeared from the depths of the trees' shadows seemed a good sign. He had scaled the fence and was now walking towards what he hoped to be the center of the compound, but he was fairly certain he was not supposed to be there. That's what fences were for. By walking confidently, he hoped, anyone else who saw him would assume he had a reason to be there.
At what must've been the facility's center, a new, modern building with large glass windows across the front stood awkwardly isolated. Venya paused a moment, but continued on, deciding that finding someone would be better than wandering around until someone found him. He walked through the main entrance and found himself in what appeared to be a laboratory. Machines lined the walls and monitors blinked and flashed under the harsh lights mounted on the ceiling. Judging from the lack of dust and the fact that a few monitors appeared to be running various programs, Venya figured that someone had been here recently and, more importantly, would soon return. Resolving to wait for whoever it was, he stepped up to a monitor, careful to keep a distance, and tried to determine what exactly it might be processing.

Rather than being greeted by a human, it was a Pokemon that entered the room to find that they had a guest in the laboratory. Despite the Houndoom's almost frightening appearance and darker tone of voice, it seemed almost polite. "You may not want to touch that," he advised, noticing that they had grown close to one of the monitors. "The Professor isn't too fond of her monitors being messed with. That one is monitoring the health and activities of the Pokemon that are currently resting inside their Pokeballs. It is part of her research." He stopped, not too close to the young man, and sat down, curling is pointed, demon-like tail around his feet. "My name is Alucard. You could consider me to be an assistant of the laboratory's professor. She has stepped out, but should be returning soon. You're free to wait for her, if you would like." Once again, it didn't occur to the Houndoom that the human may have found it strange that he was speaking. After all, not many Pokemon had such an ability in other regions. Only the few that could speak with their psychic abilities were ever heard, and that was by few and far between.

Well it is a laboratory... He thought, as the dog-like Pokemon spoke to him. Stepping away from the monitor as asked, Venya sat down cross legged in front of the Houndoom. He seemed normal in all other aspects, but he supposed a talking Pokemon was less out of place here than if he found one in the wild. Still, it was a little unnerving to be able to converse properly with a Pokemon, rather than relying on gestures and signals.
"I guess I'll wait for her, then." He said with a slight smile. He had been told by many that his smile was a great feature and that, in certain situations, could be disarming, or even calming. It was shame, as he had had little to smile about in recent years and the signature feature could only be seen in glimpses but, even then, they were fleeting. "In the meantime, Alucard, could you tell me where exactly we are? I seem to have gotten lost in the forest here."

The Houndoom nodded his head. "Of course. You are currently in the Mystic Laboratory, centered in the heart of the Mystic Forest. We are one of the two laboratories found in the Trilotics region, though we are the main one. Here, we give out Pokemon to new trainers, to anyone that suddenly arrives here after finding themselves in the forest." It was an incredibly common occurrence that people awoke in the forest after being transported to the unusual region suddenly, which was the entire reason that the professor insisted on building her laboratory here. Before Alucard could explain anything more, the front door could be heard opening again. "Oh!" A pleasant feminine voice was heard, though it was a Gardevoir that had entered the room. "It seems that our guest beat me back," she mused. "Well, welcome to the Mystic Laboratory."

Venya was more shocked by the Gardevoir than the Houndoom. The professor's a Pokemon, too. Could they do that to themselves? He tried to hide his shock, but only succeeded after a few moments. Standing to greet the professor, he says, "So are you the professor? I'm Venya." After a slight pause, he continues, "How exactly is it that you are a professor, if you don't mind my asking?"

"It is a pleasure to meet you, Venya," the Gardevoir said, bowing quite elegantly. "My name is Maevia and, though I am the professor of this laboratory, I much prefer being called by my name." She was a Pokemon, despite her position as a Pokemon Professor, so it just seemed a little strange to her to be called anything other than her name on a regular basis. "Well, you see, all of the Pokemon in this region are able to speak as plain as day to humans, as you can see by Alucard and myself. Unless they're mute, of course. You have seen Pokemon work in other positions, haven't you? It was a common practice that Chanseys were trained as nurses, for example. Why couldn't a Pokemon be a professor as well? As long as we are qualified for the job, there is no reason we shouldn't be able to have it."

Worried that he might have brought up a controversial topic, Venya hastily responded, "Of course. I don't see why a Pokemon would be barred from a certain role, unless certain physical properties made it impractical. It's just that, you must admit, Pokemon professors that are Pokemon themselves are not too common."
Trying to move away from the subject, he brought up the laboratory. "Your laboratory is pretty secluded, though. I know that professors prefer to be away from cities to focus on their work, but I haven't heard of one who decided to set up in a forest."
"Speaking of the forest," Venya started, "I'm not entirely sure how I ended up here, either. Alucard mentioned that this happens from time to time. Does that mean that quite a few people in this region are in a similar situation as I am?" To most, the concept of being teleported from one's home to another region would be terrifying, but Venya was thrilled by the thought of starting over. There wasn't much left for him at home and, while he knew he was living a cliché, he still couldn't help but be thankful for the second chance he had been given. The past was the past and the present was here. It was likely that most others were not so accepting of being dragged off suddenly.
To Venya, this was a golden opportunity. He could become a trainer again if he wanted.

Maevia smiled. "You may end up finding quite a few Pokemon holding some interesting positions around here." With her words, however, she allowed the subject to be dropped. She wasn't upset with his words or anything, but she felt it important to move on to important business.
"Alucard is correct," she said with a nod of her head. "Everyone who is not born here is brought here from their original home, be it another region or even another world, by one of the many legendary Pokemon that reside in this region. The point of their landing is usually in the middle of this forest, which is why I set up my laboratory here. After all, what better place to set up? I find it most convenient for myself and for all of the new arrivals."

A legendary brought him here? The thought was humorous to Venya, who had long believed the might of legendary Pokemon to be overestimated as much as their accompanying legends had been expanded on over the years. Any Pokemon could be legendary, its just that some made a bigger mark on the world than others. Regardless, the reason why he was picked was perplexing.
"Why are these legendaries bringing us here? Am I expected to complete some sort of task? Alucard also mentioned that you give out Pokemon to new arrivals. Is that to help with this goal?"

"That, I'm afraid, is a mystery to us all. I was also brought here by the legendaries and, I can only assume, that this was my intended fate," the Gardevoir replied. Though she may have held a lot of knowledge, she still certainly didn't know about all the mysteries of this world. What she knew now, it took time to learn. Her research in the strange region was never ending.
"In this region, the legendary Pokemon are much more active with their powers. They even go so far as to bless some of us, humans and Pokemon alike. There is a shrine here where many go to pray to the legendaries and have their wishes granted. As for why I give out Pokemon, it is what all Pokemon Professors do. We give out Pokemon to starting trainers and, since everyone is brought here without any Pokemon, everyone is a starting trainer, aren't they?" The professor really did enjoy her line of work. "At any rate, would you like to choose one?"

Though in disbelief at the prospect of training again, Venya nodded and stepped towards the monitor he had inspected earlier. On it, the silhouettes of several Pokemon were in a row, with a scrolling list of their basic information and data on their actions in the Pokeballs, though the latter meant little to him. As he reviewed the options, he asked, "What am I supposed to do when I have a Pokemon, then? Without any of these so-called legendaries providing any instructions or explanation, I'm not sure what to work towards. Does this region have gyms, as well? Attempting a gym circuit might be a good idea until someone or something reveals my purpose here."
Aside from the lab starters that were common in any other lab Venya had seen, there were also other Pokemon that he could only guess had been caught in the surrounding area. He paused at the image of a Shinx, remembering his former team, and it took some time for him to tear his gaze away. He was sure his face had betrayed the nature of his thoughts and could only hope the professor had missed it. To rebuild his composure, he quickly returned to looking at the lab starters and settled on the Charmander. Remembering the small lizard's potential and it's evolved form, he decided this would be the best choice.
Taking another moment before turning back, he says, "May I have this Charmander? I know they tend to be difficult Pokemon, but I've dealt with worse, I'm sure."

"There is a gym circuit in which trainers may compete, though it is far from the only calling that a Pokemon trainer may find. The first gym, I believe, is located in a place known as Divinity City." Maevia explained, to answer Venya's question. In her opinion, there was a lot of things to keep one's time occupied in Trilotics.
Of course, it was impossible for the professor not to notice the change in Venya's composure. Even if she hadn't seen his reaction, she would have known already, what with her species' capability to often be attuned to the feelings of those around them. However, for the young man's sake, she didn't mention any of it.
"Not a bad choice," she concluded, after he made his decision. With the pressing of a few buttons on the computer, the trainer's choice in Pokemon was confirmed. The machine came to life instantly with the confirmation, making a whirring sound while several little red lights began to flash. In a moment's time, a Pokeball was dispensed onto a platform on the machine. "Well, there you have it," Maevia commented. She then held up a satchel that she had gathered, one of the many that she left prepared in the laboratory. "There are supplies in this that should be useful to you, including a Pokedex."

Taking the Pokeball and satchel, Venya began to make his way to the door. "Thank you, Maevia." He said, with a short bow. "If you need help in the future, let me know. I'm sure one of the lab Pokemon here could be used to get a message to me. I'll try to come back if you need anything." With a few more parting words, Venya was back outside, with the forest continuing on endlessly in all directions.
As he started to walk, Venya looked over the Pokedex. He had never had one when he was training before, since they were supposed to be valuable. Only a few trainers were trusted with them. He didn't think he'd need to use it, as he'd been a trainer without it before, but he had decided against turning it down in the lab when Maevia offered it. Throwing it back in the satchel, he walked into the woods.
He was officially a trainer again.
