After walking through the first stands of trees, the forest swiftly closed behind Venya and the light of day became increasingly rare as the canopy thickened. Once he was well into the woods, he sat down on a rotting log to take stock of the supplies Maevia had been kind enough to give him. He had a couple days of food, both for him and a Pokemon, though that'd be spread out more if he caught any more Pokemon. To that end, he also had a few empty Pokeballs and some money. Though the denominations of the currency were familiar enough and easy to work with, he did not recognize the images displayed on the bills and just assumed they were key places in the region. Finally, having become as aware of his situation as he figured he could, he took the miniaturized Pokeball from his pocket and threw it. After a dramatic flash and accompanying noise of air being displaced as a Pokemon materialized, a young Charmander stood before Venya.
The fiery lizard looked at Venya first, but then moved on to examining the scenery. It made a point of taking its time before returning its attention to him. When it finally did, it remained silent, just flicking its tail up and down on the one side, the flame waving silently with the movement.
"My name is Venya. I'm going to be your trainer." He ventured. Appearing unimpressed, it returned to looking at the trees.
"A timid Charmander? I've never seen that before." This time, annoyed, it Venya with its tail, throwing a none-too-friendly glare his way.
"Alright then, not timid. Just stubborn. Anyway, we need a name for you. Hmm... " As he was thinking, the flame of Charmander's tail passed near him again. "Ah! I'll call you Piro."
The Charmander, now named Piro, looked at him again, the longest yet, and growled, "You're annoying."
"You can talk, too?" Venya asked. It couldn't decide if this was just something specific to lab Pokemon, but at this point he wouldn't have much trouble accepting that all Pokemon could speak in this region.
"Of course I can talk, all Pokemon can. It's up to humans whether they listen or not."
"Well I'm listening." Venya offered a smile.
Turning to him fully and returning a smile of his own, Piro responded, "I suppose you are. 'Piro' seems like a decent name. I don't mind it."
"Alright then, now that introductions are over, shall we go?" Venya stood up from the log. "Together, we'll train to become strong. In time, you could even be a legendary in your own right, like those that have brought me here."
A neutral relationship established, Venya started walking again, Piro following along off to the side a bit. They would grow to like each other, he was sure. Friendships aren't cultivated in the first moments of conversation, after all.

After walking for some time, the two came across a cluster of decent sized rocks. Seeing it as a good opportunity, Venya had tried to order Piro to practice on them, but the Charmander refused to take his orders, instead arguing with him. In the ensuing argument, Venya discovered that Piro was, in fact, female, when she launched into a tirade of feminist accusations.
"... and just because you're a male doesn't earn you the right to order me around!" She continued.
"I'm not a Charmander, though. As your trainer, I'm supposed to give you orders." Venya replied, his first sentence since she had started ranting several minutes prior. To quiet him, Piro slashed his arm with a Scratch attack. Deciding it wasn't worth it, Venya allowed her to continue her speech as he wrapped up his arm, just as the red ribbons of blood started to show.
Instead of arguing, Venya watched, slightly amused, as the small lizard stomped back and forth, throwing targeted words at him with intent to insult. Her tail flame flitted about as she swished her tail back on every turn, barely returning to its normal stature before being tossed again on the next about face.

When Piro showed no signs of letting up her tirade, Venya stood again and started walking. The Charmander, annoyed that he appeared to be ignoring her, followed, shouting at him. This continued for a good amount of time until Piro finally tired of her argument and walked at his side. The path started to get a bit overgrown the farther they went and Venya tried to make another opportunity out of it.
Instead of ordering, he asked, "Piro, how well can you control your fire?"
"Very well! I'm a fire Pokemon, I'd be ridiculous if I couldn't control fire with grace."
"If you were to clear this path, would you be able to stop it from setting the whole forest up in flame?"
After a slight pause, "O-of course! But why should I? You're trying to order me around again, after you insulted my abilities!"
"I just want to see how skilled you are. If we run into a tough Pokemon, I need to know if you'll be able to handle it, or if you'll run on sight." He replied, stifling a chuckle as his Pokemon started to appear visibly agitated.
"I would never run! Now move, you're in the way!" As he expected, she took the bait and stepped a bit farther along the path. She paused a minute and then went to the sides of the trail and started digging little trenches in a rough square across the walkway. When she finished this, she lowered her tailflame onto a patch of grass and watched it burn. The whole square went up soon enough, but didn't cross the trenches, and eventually burned itself back out. This done, she threw him a look, clearly saying, see?
Venya, though, asked, "Why didn't you use Flamethrower?"
A little shocked that her work was ignored, she said, "It was easier this way."
"How was it easier? You had to dig, whereas a Flamethrower would burn a single area that you wanted."
"Because I don't know how to yet!" She yelled, embarrassed. Venya was sure she blushed, too, but her orange skin hid any signs of it.
Before his Pokemon ran off, he called, "That's why you need me." To answer her startled look, "I'm a Pokemon Trainer. My job, aside from being your friend, is to train you and any other Pokemon I catch. If you run off, you won't learn Flamethrower out here for many years. With me, we can work on it and you'll learn it in no time. You might even evolve in the process."
With this, he sat down in the newly created clearing and pulled out some of the rations and set some out for Piro before starting to eat his own. She sulked for a minute, but eventually dragged herself over and started eating as well.
"I won't order you to do unnecessarily difficult tasks. I'll try not to give too many harsh orders, too." Venya said, breaking the silence. "If we compromise and work together, we both can get far." The little fire Pokemon looked up him, probably seeing him for the first time as a trainer, and agreed.
They ate in silence for some time before Venya said, "But remember... a trainer's judgement isn't always right..." Trailing off, he dropped the subject and Piro, thankfully, didn't press him on it.

The scent of smoke carried out through the rest of the forest after the Charmander had dared to set any of it aflame. This agitated many of the local Pokemon that called the area home, but many of them ran away from the smoke in fear of an outbreak of fire. However, one Pokemon in particular headed toward the forest, where the smoke had originated from. "How dare you burn any of our forest?" An angered voice bellowed as something shot out from the trees in the blink of an eye into the burned clearing where Venya and Piro resided. Standing before them, bladed arms held high and with eyes dangerously glinting, was one very upset Scyther.

Brightening, Venya said, "And this might be a good chance to start."
Ordinarily, he would have just ordered his Pokemon to attack and get the initiative in the battle, but the Pokemon in this region were somewhat different from those in Sinnoh. Here, they talked and it seemed wrong to suddenly attack something that had verbally accused him of damaging its home, so instead he tried to reason with the Scyther.
"I didn't burn the forest. This path was here before, but it started to get a bit overgrown in this area. I just asked Piro clear it so we could sit down." He gestured towards the small trenches around the area. "She even had the creative idea of digging those trenches so the fire wouldn't spread."
Thinking back, he remembered from his earlier travels that Scyther were known to be relatively aggressive, especially so towards those it viewed as invading its territory. The likelihood of the Scyther backing down were slim, regardless of how well Venya thought he could negotiate with it, assuming it still acted like those around other regions. The bright blades on its arms were far more imposing, and likely effective, than Piro's claws. So, as a precaution, he whispered to her to start Growling if the bug Pokemon made any threatening move.

The Scyther didn't appear to be easily reasoned with, at least not with the reasons that Venya had attempted to offer. There was no excuse for burning things, in an area that wasn't there own, just because they thought they should. "There was never meant to be any trails," it barked back. "This is a forest, not a human's playground, and this land was starting to heal itself." Regardless of that, they had also caused the disruption of the other local Pokemon. With the scent of smoke, no matter how mild, it still managed to drive them out. "Running others out of their home is hardly excusable."
