Ah, and there came the inevitable question. Just about everyone asked if there was a possible way of getting home or something of the likes. Well prepared for this, Maevia shook her head. "I am afraid not," she started, sounding a bit sad about having to relay the message, no matter how many times that she already had. "I wouldn't even be able to tell you where your home is. If it is so different from here... perhaps your home is... an entirely different world? I see no other reasonable explanation as to why you wouldn't know what a Pokemon was. This entire world is inhabited by Pokemon."
As Maevia spoke, the wolf Pokemon situated himself near by. "Didn't you receive a letter before coming here?" Alucard asked, looking at Dana with an almost critical stare. "I've heard that everyone chosen usually receives a letter about seven days prior to being brought here. That was your chance. If you didn't say goodbye then, too late for it now."

Dana turned, looking a little sad, to Alucard. "I did tell people about it, but I didn't actually say goodbye...I really thought it was just a prank of some sort." She rubbed her fingers together slowly as she spoke, her expression sorrowful. "My parents will have no idea what happened to me, probably..." She then paused, not knowing what else to say.
"I suppose...I could try to make it in this world."

"Alucard, you do not have to be so harsh," Maevia murmured, touching her hand lightly to the wolf Pokemon's head. The Houndoom glanced up at her only briefly, watching as she removed her hand, without saying a word on the matter. Alucard may have had a kind heart, but he was much more straight forward than the Gardevoir that worked as the professor. He could have never really done her job.
"If you choose to travel in this world, which is what all newcomers usually choose to do in hopes to find their place, you will need a companion to help guide you," the psychic Pokemon said, smiling at Dana. "And Maevia here is the perfect one to help with that," Alucard added. "Indeed," she replied. "Here we give out Pokemon that are meant to travel with trainers, which is what you will be, should you choose to accept a Pokemon. With your help, a Pokemon may grow to be quite strong and, should you create a friendship with them, they will help you and protect you."

"Really? You'd give me a companion? That's great! Thank you!" cried Dana, grinning for the first time since arriving. "I assume this Poh-kee-mohn you provide me with will be able to speak as well?" Back in her old life, that now seemed so distant, she had often wished to be able to speak with Soybean...and now, she could have a companion she could speak with!

"We give a Pokemon to all starting trainers, to any newcomer trying to make it in this world," the Gardevoir explained. "Come now, follow me," she said, gesturing with her hand for Dana to follow her. The professor went to a machine that was found at the back of the very room that they were in. To Dana, it would probably remind her of a small super computer. It had a large monitor and a keypad, though it also had a pipe that shot out from part of the monitor that appeared to dispense something into a depression in an otherwise flat part of the machine below. Maevia fiddled with the keypad, bringing up a list of the Pokemon that they had at the lab, complete with pictures. "You can choose any one of the Pokemon from this list."
"And yes," Alucard added, looking toward Dana. "Every last Pokemon here can be understood by humans and can speak, unless they are born mute, that is."

"Oh," said Dana, looking at Alucard. "That's a good thing, I guess..." she continued, looking at the list. There were so many to choose from, she didn't even know where to start...
"Well, I think I'd like a Piplup," she said. She'd always been fond of penguins. "Male, if possible."

"A Piplup, is it?" Maevia repeated. "Nice choice. I'm afraid, however, I am unable to guarantee genders. This machine, here, was created to choose one of our Pokemon at random, after a trainer has chosen a species. We have more than one available Piplup, you see, and it will choose one of them at complete random."
"Leave it up to destiny," Alucard stated, adding on to what the professor had to say. "That is what we have come to believe, anyway. After all, we consider it destiny that brings everyone here."
As the Houndoom spoke, Maevia used the keypad on the machine to confirm Dana's choice of Pokemon. In the same instant, the machine came to life with flashing lights and a whizzing sound. In moments, a red and white ball was dispensed from the pipe into the depression on the surface of the machine.
"There you have it," Maevia stated. "That there is a Pokeball, containing your Piplup, which come in many different colors and styles. Pokeballs are capsuls used for capturing wild Pokemon and for the Pokemon to live in while being transported with their trainers. Once a Pokemon has been captured inside a one, it and the Pokeball are imprinted to one another. The Pokemon can be captured in no other Pokeball and the Pokeball may only be used with that Pokemon, unless you choose to release that Pokemon. Then both the ball and Pokemon loose their imprint."
Maevia explained all of this while she shuffled over to a box that rested next to the machine. She pulled out a small bag from it and offered it to the girl. "I would also like you to have this. It contains a few useful things for survival and for your journey as a Pokemon trainer. There is a Pokedex inside, for example. If you ever see a Pokemon, wild or not, and want to know about it, just point your Pokedex at it. It will give you some information about it. And your Pokegear, which can be upgraded if you acquire the upgrade cards. Currently, it can only be used as a phone. My number is already programmed in, if you ever need to call me for advice or anything."

"Thank you!" exclaimed Dana, taking the offered items with a smile. Now that she had a form of communication and defense, she felt like she would be much better able to make it in this world. While she hoped the Piplup would be a male, she didn't mind a female...she already had a name in mind, if it did not already have a name.
"So...where should I start?" she asked, as she moved towards the door, much more enthusiastic-looking now.

"You're welcome," Maevia offered with a smile. "There is a town called Ruelda Town just on the outskirts of the forest. It may be best to start there," Maevia suggested, just as she had suggested with all other starting trainers. After all, there wasn't anywhere else to go. Aside from the shrine, the whole area around was just the forest until one got to the town. From then on, things gradually became more and more civilized. Well, in some areas, anyway.
"If you ever need any help, other trainers may be able to offer you some advice. There are lots of people in this region and many of them are decent people," Alucard added. He wondered if her world was anything like their own, if she really did come from another place entirely.

"Alright," said Dana, pushing open the door. "I suppose this is goodbye for now, then." She waved at Maevia and Alucard, then closed the door and set off. She was nervous and confused in this new world, but now she had someone at her side...
