Sofia entered the training grounds. All her Pokémon were with her. None of them had been here before, though. Sofia looked around. There was just endless ground to be seen. Was there no civilisation at all here? She refused to be stuck in such a place. "We stay close to the entrance", she decided. "Why?" asked Akina. "We have to walk all the way back otherwise." Sofia shook her head. "It's just empty land." "There are supposed to be caves here. And water. Probably even a waterfall." Lacuna was eager to explore. "You can ride again. It won't be taxing for you at all." "I still don't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere." Sofia sat up nonetheless. Then she remembered something. She called out the Petilil. "You'll come with us, too. Maybe you will like it here. It may be like in your park. There's a lot of grass here. Perhaps you can enjoy yourself a bit here. Wouldn't that be nice?" Sofia looked at the little Pokémon. The Petilil was silent, but finally nodded.

Sofia got down again to pick her up. Akina would have to walk again. The Vulpix didn't seem to mind, though. She was used to walking, after all. Sofia wondered if Lacuna liked this, too. Maybe he wanted to go a bit faster sometimes. Akina surely couldn't run that fast, though. And Sofia might fall down without a saddle. "Let us go then", she decided. Maybe they could find a nice place to rest and Lacuna could run around a bit. They were silent for a few minutes as they entered the training grounds more. The ground was even so far. Lacuna had no problems walking. It was rather boring for Sofia. "What are we supposed to do here?" she asked. "We need to train", Lacuna answered. Sofia grimaced. Training for battles, probably. She still didn't like the thought of it. Why did they have to do this? Surely there had to be a better way to make money. True, Sofia didn't battle herself. Her Pokémon would get hurt, though. The thought was unsettling. They were all very nice. There was no reason why she should allow someone to beat them up. Couldn't they just be in this world in peace? Her family would find this horrible. Her father would disapprove of her even thinking of such a thing. Lacuna was at least pretty big.

But Akina was small and cute. The Petilil, too. Especially the Petilil. She was always so scared. Sofia couldn't imagine her fighting at all. She wondered if the Petilil ever had. She had lived alone, after all. Did wild Pokémon attack other wild Pokémon? Sofia didn't know. She doubted she would get an answer, though. The Petilil didn't like to talk about herself. Sofia really had to have a talk with her. She needed to know what was up. They would do that in the next town. Maybe Akina should do the talking. The Petilil was scared of Sofia, after all. Or at least it seemed like that. For now, she was sitting quietly on Sofia's lap. The girl could feel the Pokémon wasn't relaxed, though. She had no idea how to change that. Could the Petilil ride on Akina? No, Akina was too small. Sofia wanted Akina to ride, too. Akina had such soft feet. She shouldn't walk. But there was only limited space on Lacuna's back. Maybe it would work when Lacuna evolved. Sofia wondered how he would look then. He had told her before, but she couldn't really imagine it. Hopefully even more regal.

She was very proud of her Pokémon. They were all really nice and she was happy about that. She was also glad they were all rare, though. That and very pretty. This was a good thing. It would hide that she was poor right now. She needed more money. But people would think of her as rich thanks to her Pokémon. She knew Lacuna would be angry if she said that loud, though. He didn't understand nobility. None of them probably did, even though Akina seemed kind towards them. That was okay. The Petilil, though, seemed to know nobles. Sofia really wanted to ask. For now though, they were riding and walking silently. Sofia looked back. The entrance had disappeared from sight. Hopefully, the weather would hold. "How do we train?" she asked. "I have no idea about these things." "We practice our attacks", Lacuna replied. Sofia blinked. She had never seen a Pokémon attack before. What were they like? Did the Pokémon make them up? Or was there a list somewhere? This was all so complicated. First the evolutions. She understood that by now. Then the types.

That somehow made sense, too. At least some of them. She remembered what Lacuna had said. Why were psychic Pokémon afraid of bugs? That didn't make sense. Sofia understood, though. She was afraid of bugs, too. Every noble woman was. It was a rule. Maybe psychic Pokémon were nobles? She needed one, then! Maybe there was a list with pictures of all Pokémon? She could pick the prettiest then. She was very happy for now, though. But who knew how awesome some could be? So far, all her Pokémon were cute. Nyla had been stunning, though. She wanted a Pokémon like Nyla. Nyla was probably evolved, though. She was very big, after all. Her Pokémon were unevolved and small. It all made sense. Maevia was probably evolved, too. Sofia wondered if Akina could evolve. Maybe her wings would get much bigger then. Could Akina even fly with her little wings? She always walked everywhere. Sofia was just about to ask that question when she saw a forest from Lacuna's back. "A forest again!" Sofia ran a hand through her hair without letting go of Petilil with the other.

There were so many forests here! "I just got out of one!" She didn't want to get into one again. "We could get lost." "I hear water!" said Akina. "Let's check it out." "Good idea", Lacuna replied. "Maybe we'll find a spot to train. We are weak to water, after all." Sofia looked at the Petilil. "Have you fought before", she finally asked. The Petilil didn't react for a second. Then she shook her head. Sofia nodded. "Do you want to?" she asked. "I will not force you. It sounds horrible anyway. Can a cute thing like you even attack?" How would a Petilil attack? "I have...two attacks", the little Pokémon replied. "I have three", Akina chimed in. "I have four", Lacuna said. "Huh." Sofia blinked. Lacuna had talked to her about levels before. It had been complicated. "Aren't you all at the same level? Why do some of you have more attacks then? That doesn't make sense." "We are all different Pokémon", Akina smiled.

"But that's unfair!" Sofia protested. The poor, little Petilil, with only two attacks! She didn't seem bothered by that, though. That also meant there was a certain number of attacks then. So the Pokémon didn't make them up. But who told them the attacks? "Can't you just make some more up?" she asked. "We learn attacks when we level up. We don't invent them", Lacuna said. "No one knows why. Scientists research that system still. It just happens. We also can have only a few attacks. It's rather weird to think about. To us, it's natural, though. We just don't think too much about it. If we forget an attack when we learn a new one, it's normal. Just accept it. I know this is weird for humans. It's even weird for the humans of this world. So it's even stranger for you, I suppose. But that's how Pokémon work. There is no better explanation. Just go with it." Sofia shook her head slowly and Akina gave her an understanding smile. This world was so messed up! Levels! Limited attacks! How did that make sense? How could one just forget something like that? How could strength be measured in numbers and go up all of sudden? This was all seeming rather unreal.

Maybe this was all a whacked-up dream of hers? It certainly seemed real, though. It gave her a headache. "I'll just pretend I understand." She sighed. "Let's go to the water then." She would just let the Pokémon do what they wanted to do. She didn't even want to be here in the first place. Lacuna had insisted. In the end, so had Akina. No one had asked Petilil because she hated to be outside. And Sofia had been kind of ignored. She really needed to work on that. This was not how it was supposed to be. She was the trainer! She gave the instructions! Only that she had no clue about being a trainer. So it was kind of understandable if the Pokémon decided, she guessed. She still didn't want to be here, though. By now they had entered the forest. Even Sofia heard the water now. Walking was slower now. Branches were everywhere. There was no path in sight. Akina had trouble jumping over the obstacles. Lacuna had longer legs. He had less problems. Maybe he wanted to wait for Akina, though. Riding was a bit uncomfortable right now. Sofia made sure to hold Petilil tight.

The little Pokémon tensed at that. She would fall off otherwise, though. That was probably why she didn't complain. Or maybe she just wanted to be silent again. It took them some time to get forward, especially Akina. Obviously, no one cleaned up here. This was wild land. Sofia was scared of getting attacked. She had three Pokémon outside, though. Two were really small, though. She wondered if Lacuna was stronger than the others. They were all the same level, after all! "Lacuna, are you stronger than Akina and Petilil?" she asked. "You are bigger. You have more attacks, too. But you are the same level. I'm not sure I understand." Lacuna nodded. "Good question there. I am not stronger. Pokémon of the same level are rather equal in strength. Though of course, some are better in defense. They have weaker attack then. Also, unevolved Pokémon are usually weaker than evolved ones. But since the three of us are all unevolved, we're equally of the same strength. I really am bigger, though. That could be an advantage in battles. Then again, being small means you can evade better. Or so I would think, at least. I make for a bigger target.

But I could also easily try to stomp on small Pokémon. It all depends on what's happening. Don't think too much about size. Think in types. That's better. Weaknesses and strengths mean everything. They can make up for level differences. Which is why it's good to have attacks of different types on a Pokémon." "I see." Sofia nodded. It was all so much! It made sense, though. "Do you have anything but fire attacks?" she asked. Lacuna laughed. He sounded nervous. "I am a fire Pokémon, true. I have no fire attack yet, though." "What?!" Sofia stared. "How does that make sense?" "I will learn one with higher levels." Lacuna smiled. "Akina has one, I think." "I do." Akina nodded. "A weak one, but I have it." "Okay." Sofia sighed. Pokémon were weird. "And you, Petilil? Do you have a grass attack?" Petilil squeaked when she was talked to again.

"I do..." The Petilil didn't turn around. "And another one... That one is not an attack. It does something else. It raises my attack stat..." "Oh, yes." Sofia nodded. Lacuna had said something like that before. That not all attacks were real attacks. "We have those, too", Akina said. Lacuna nodded. Sofia smiled at Petilil. "Well, you have one. That's good! None would be worse! You need to defend yourself! I won't force you to fight, ever. It's horrible! But if we need to defend ourselves, it's good to have a real attack." Sofia wondered if she would ever have to fight herself. Maybe she could poke someone with her parasol. It might break, though. So she would rather not. It was her only one. Well, she had a lot more at home. Home was far away, though. Right now, she could barely afford food. It was as if she were a commoner. It was embarrassing. She hated it. She wanted to be rich again. Life was much easier then. She didn't deserve this.

Maybe she should go to the shrine soon again. Not only to try to find the culprit again who brought her here. She could wish for money! If the gods granted Pokémon, why not money? At least they granted Pokéballs. Maybe she should wish for those. Then she could sell them. It would make her look less greedy. Appearances were everything. Even as a noble, you had to seem modest. Well, modest while still looking as good as possible. Commoners were rather sensitive. Not that she cared about them. They worked for her, though, so she had to keep them at least a bit happy. She definitely cared more about her Pokémon, though. She really wanted to take them back when she got home. Petilil could live in her sister's garden. Lacuna could stay with all the horses. He would be the greatest of them all! And Akina could live in her room. If she got ever bored, she could go to the near forest. It was a forest where nothing attacked you. Like a forest should really be! Not like the forests in this world. There were too many of them and they were scary. There were animals in her world, yes. Normally, though, they didn't attack people. They also weren't that smart. Why would dumb animals not attack and smart Pokémon would? Weren't animals running on instincts?

Another point why this world was so odd. Not that anyone understood. It was all normal to her Pokémon. Would they find her world strange, then? Probably. Maybe they wouldn't want to go with her. There were no other Pokémon around then, after all. It was understandable, but very sad. Sofia wanted to show them to her sister. She knew she would love them, too. Especially Petilil! Her sister loved plants. Maybe she should name Petilil after her sister? No, that would probably make them both mad. Petilil still needed a name, though. Just her species wouldn't do. Even if she didn't want it! Sofia would just call her something else in her head then. At least until Petilil was ready to accept her new name. Sofia refused to let her go. She was her Pokémon now. Sofia had ideas for names, too. She hoped to see a picture of a Lilligant soon, though. It would make the matter easier. As would figuring out what was wrong with her Pokémon. They reached the source of the water by now. Akina was glad walking was easier again. So was Lacuna. There was a rather huge lake. A stream sprang from it. There was a waterfall, too. The water was really clear.

It was a beautiful sight. The waterfall was rather loud, though. Lacuna stopped at the lake. Sofia got down. Her Pokémon probably wanted to drink. She looked for a place to sit. She really had to get a piece of cloth. Something she could put onto these rocks to save her dress from getting dirty. She only had this one, after all. They needed more money. Not only for food. Sofia needed more clothes. And the Pokémon needed supplies. Good thing the entry here was free. Otherwise, they would not have come here. Hopefully, her Pokémon would get stronger here. That would be good. Getting stronger without fighting was good. She still didn't like it here, though. Not a building in sight. She sighed. Akina and Lacuna were drinking by now. Petilil seemed to enjoy the water. At least she seemed more active than before. She was splashing around in the shallow water. Sofia smiled. Maybe this would help. She got up and knelt down next to Petilil. "Do you want water on your leaves?" she asked. Petilil hesitated.

Then she nodded slowly. Sofia started sprinkling water over her. She had to be careful to keep her dress dry. Petilil liked it, though. The water was rather cool. Sofia found it almost freezing. The grass Pokémon seemed to like it this way. Sofia wondered if she needed to water Petilil more often. She was a plant, after all. Or was she? She wasn't sure. Would it be rude to ask that? Petilil had no roots. No matter how close Sofia looked, though, she also seemed to have no mouth. How did she drink? Lacuna and Akina seemed really thirsty. So Pokémon needed water. Pokémon were really strange. Or at least Petilil was. Sofia wondered if there were even stranger Pokémon. She really hoped she could find a book. One with pictures of every Pokémon. The Pokémon called the gods 'Pokémon' as well. Sofia hoped she could see pictures of them, too. The one god she had met had looked rather surprising. She wanted to see them all. She wondered if there were clues in how they looked. Maybe one would look like a Pokémon travelling worlds. She really needed to find the one who had abducted her. He or she was probably really powerful. Maybe the biggest of them. She had to ask for a library in the next town.
