Jessari shifted her backpack into a slightly more comfortable position as she and her Squirtle walked through the forest. Roza and Puff were snug in their Pokeballs, taking a little rest while she and Dimka talked.
"So, let me get this straight. You named me after a fictional person in a book that you brought here from another world?"
The corner of Jessari's mouth quirked upward in quiet amusement. "Yup. His name was Dimitri Belikov, but all his friends called him Dimka. I think you'd have liked him."
Her Squirtle let out a snort of disbelief. "Why'd people call him that if his name was Dimitri, and why do you think I'd like him? Who was he, anyway?"
"Russians create their nicknames differently than we do. Dimka is the diminutive form of Dimitri, just like Roza is the diminutive form of Roze. And I think you'd like him because you are both fighters. He lived in a society where his kind were looked upon as protectors, and he was the best. Well, aside from Roza, perhaps."
"I think that's a stupid nickname for Dimitri," Dimka said bluntly. "It just doesn't make any sense. And what's a dim...dimuni..never mind." He was quiet for a moment, and his brow narrowed in thought. "I guess I'm okay with that as a name, since he was a fierce warrior like me."
Jessari fought a smile. "Yeah, you're my tough little protector, alright."
Then a light seemed to come on in Dimka's head. "Wait, Roza's in that book, too? Who is she named after?"
It took a moment for Jess to reply, and when she did, she seemed to be choosing her words carefully, as if she was holding something back from her Pokemon. "In the book, Roza was a damphir just like Dimitri, which means the offspring of the Moroi, peace-loving vampires, and humans. The damphir were much stronger than their Moroi relatives, so they were often given duties as guardians. Roza, along with Dimka, were the most famous guardians in their society, because they were the best fighters. They were smart, strong, and loyal, and took down any Strigoi, evil vampires, who came after their charges."
Dimka took a moment to process this. Good vampires and bad vampires. Who knew? Then, "Dimka and Roza weren't in love in that book, right?"
Jess avoided his eyes as he glared at her. "Erm, of course not! Just friends. They were just friends."
"Good," he grumped. "I'd hate to think you expected me to fall in love with that Eevee you won. It's hard enough just getting along with her."
