As soon as she was in the forest, Dana threw the Pokeball, releasing a small blue creature that stared cutely up at her. She bent down so that she was more on its level, although she still towered above him quite a bit. "So you're my new trainer, eh?" he asked, tilting his head. "Well, I hope you'll do better than some of the others I've seen. You don't have any prejudice about my kind, I hope-" "Eeee! You're so cute!" squealed Dana, suddenly becoming talkative as she began to pet the Piplup happily on the head. "I'm Dana! What's your name?" "Name? I don't have a name," replied the penguin-like Pokemon, annoyed. "Well then, can I give you a name?" "Fine then..." "I'll call you Mumble!" "Would you mind explaining why?" "Oh, uh, he's a character in a film...in my world...he's a penguin, and you look like a penguin." "Is he a tough character?" "..." "Huh?" "Let's just get going..."

As they strolled along, Mumble running often so that he could catch up to Dana, Dana pondered this new world. A world where animals could talk..well, not animals, but certainly creatures of a sort. And apparently, they had all sorts of odd powers. Well, it would certainly be nice to explore this new place. It would be like...starting anew, from a blank slate.
"Do you sing?" she asked Mumble after a while. "It's a bit too quiet...I'd like us to sing as we walked."
"Sing? I suppose I could try...what would you like to sing?"
Dana blushed a little. "I'd like to try a song from my own world. It's in Chinese-that's another language-so I'm not sure how much of it you'd understand. But it sounds nice."
"Go ahead," he replied with a shrug.
Dana took a breath. "Alright, here goes...
"Xiang shou jin xia tian de re, Chuan yue jiao xing fu de he, Xiang zuo tun da xiang de she- Bu zi liang li shuo zhen de! You he bu ke? Wo xiang xie ge."
She paused "Do you need me to explain?"
"B-bu. Wo ting de dong, (N-no. I understand)" replied Mumble. He looked as shocked as she felt.
"Y-you understand Chinese?"
"Apparently."

"Excellent!" said Dana. "That means we can keep singing together! And I'll teach you other songs as well!" Her expression was unbelievably bright and happy. Her new companion seemed to enjoy singing just as much as she did!
So the two of them continued through the forest, singing, humming, skipping, and dancing. They would have looked very foolish to anyone who encountered them, but they didn't care about looking foolish. They were too busy enjoying themselves.

The unique words that rang out through the forest, coming from both Dana and her penguin Pokemon, was heard by many of the wild Pokemon in the surrounding area. For some, it was quite difficult to understand. The words struck much interest in one, however, that began to venturing toward the source of the words. It perched in the trees near the trainer, its chirping sounding off. Though the Pokemon remained unseen, it was happily attempting to join in on their song.

Dana paused. "Do you hear something, Mumble?"
"You mean, other than that song?"
"Yes...no wait, it does sound like the song."
"But we've stopped singing..."
There was a pause as the two of them digested that information. Unfortunately, they came to the wrong conclusion.
"OHMYGAWD A GHOST!" squealed Mumble, hurling himself into Dana's arms. "A ECHO GHOST!"
Dana might have figured it out, but Mumble's panic, and her own ignorance about this world, led her to believe this was true. She gave a small, shrill cry that would have been rather embarrassing had anyone been around to hear, and took off in a random direction, which was unfortunately blocked by a tree.

The Pokemon stopped singing when Mumble started to shout. At that point, it had to fight off laughing at the pair and their silliness. "I'm not a ghost," it chirped back at them from the tree. "I was only admiring your song, that's all. It sounded quite, uh, nice." It was silent a moment more, before adding, "It sounded very unique."

"Oh," said Mumble, now feeling embarrassed and realizing he was clinging much too tightly to Dana. He released her, and dropped quite agilely to the ground.
"It's in Chinese!" added Dana. "That's a foreign language, which is probably why you thought it odd." She paused. "Can you come out where we can see you?"

The Pokemon, still unseen, tilted its head, not seeming to know the meaning of 'Chinese.' It just happened to like the song for how unique it sounded. It didn't see anything wrong with it at all. After Dana asked to see it, though, the Pokemon hesitated and had to think it over. "I...suppose," it chirped back in response. Out of the trees flew a fairly colorful bird Pokemon, also unique in its own way, having feathers on its head that appeared much like a musical note. It was a Chatot, which was clear to anyone that had seen one. "Hello," it greeted them now that it was sitting on the ground. It wasn't entirely comfortable there, since it was a basic rule that flying Pokemon should keep to the trees in the case of danger, but it supposed that it would be okay for a little while since there was a training standing so near by.

"Aww!" squealed Dana. "You're adorable! You're so pretty! Like a parrot, except your head is shaped like a music note! And that makes you even cuter!" Yes, she definitely got along better with nonhumans. She even crouched down and reached out towards the Chatot's head. "Can I pet you?" she begged.
"She's not from this world," added Mumble by way of explanation. "She didn't even know what Pokemon were before today."

The Chatot titled its head quite cutely to the side, making the music note seem crooked. "I suppose that I don't mind," it chirped as an answer to Dana's question. It didn't mind the idea of petted, even though it never had been before. It was born and raised in the wild, though it had witnessed many trainers pass through the forest. It had also met the professor, only for a moment, but she had been a Pokemon as well. Did that really count?
"I see." It thought over what the other Pokemon had said. So this human hadn't ever seen a Pokemon until today. "You seem to be taking it all very well," he said, eyes going back to Dana.

"Oh thank you!" squealed Dana, reaching out to gently pet the Chatot's head feathers. "Well," she added, "I haven't been in this world long, I admit, but I have always wanted to be able to speak to animals and understand them. So this is sort of like a dream come true to me! Although I do miss my family...I figure since I'm stuck here, I shouldn't complain or whine! That's just silly!"

The Chatot cooed happily as the human stroked its feathers. It felt quite nice. "You have a brilliant outlook on the world," it complimented in a cheerful manner. "I've heard all sorts of trainers wandering through here that wanted to do nothing else but complain the whole way. I see no sense in it." Complaining really was just a complete waste of time.
It then looked over to the Piplup. "So I take it that you are her only Pokemon, currently?" It asked, sounding curious.

"Yes. We just left the laboratory, after all," said Mumble. "She hasn't even had a chance to capture any other Pokemon." There was a pause, as Dana herself digested this information.
"Um...would you like to come with us?" she asked the Chatot, somewhat shyly. "I'd really like you to-it's always nice to have some more friends along in a new place! And you like my song...well, not mine as in I wrote it, but you know what I mean."

The Chatot titled its head to the opposing side that it had just been on. It, too, processed the information that Mumble gave it. Its eyes shifted to Dana when she invited it to go with her. Adjusting its wings habitually, the Pokemon eyed the trainer up and down. It had enjoyed her song, and she seemed nice enough. So why not go with her?
The bird Pokemon Pokemon nodded its head then. "All right. I'll come along with you. I've always like the idea of seeing places that I've never seen before, and you both seem like a pleasant bunch."
